Monthly Nature Adventures: 12 Months of Family Fun

Family time spent reconnecting with nature is one of the most powerful ways to cultivate stronger relationships. You get the chance to explore the world through the eyes of young children, while kids have a tactile way of creating fun memories.

Each month is a new opportunity to try out some games, go on a bike ride together, and get up close and personal with the world. If you want exciting ways to turn weekends into discoveries, try following the recommendations from this list of monthly nature adventures that will spark curiosity and build family traditions everyone can love.

January – Enjoying Winter’s Quiet Beauty

The first month of the year welcomes new beginnings. While the toddler girl tricycle might be hanging up in the garage for now, there are still plenty of nature activities you can kick off. The snowy climate is a canvas for learning about fresh animal tracks and telling stories about the creatures sharing your living space.

Go outside and build a fort. For those in colder climates, that might be a snow shelter, while warmer areas have a treehouse. Let imagination inspire a fort perfect for games. A good trick is to include an “adventure jar” around New Year’s Day. You can fill it with ideas from everyone in the family. For example, who wants to go cross-country skiing or enjoy a winter picnic.

February – Signs of Change & Love

February is often when winter is the harshest. Spring might be around the corner, but storms and early nights are still a regular occurrence. Now is the time to set up a backyard bird feeder for winter winged guests.

One thing that often gets overlooked is to tie in nature to monthly holidays. For families celebrating Valentine’s Day, why not go outside and collect leaves, rocks, twigs, nuts, and other elements to turn into hearts and specialty gifts for other family members? There’s a good chance you’ll find a delicate blossom hiding here or there.

March – Wind & Wonder

The shifting skies of March signal it’s time to get outdoors. Temperatures are starting to rise again, and maybe your local park has dried out enough for an afternoon of kite flying. Head over to the beach or open meadow and imagine what hidden shapes, animals, and beasts are hiding in the cloud outlines.

Go ahead and enjoy the first family bike ride with your 3 in 1 toddler tricycle for 1-4 year olds. Create a family weather journal where you track how the world is awakening from winter or go north and enjoy maple sugaring and wildflower walks.

April – Blossoms & Bugs

April brings much longer days that are perfect for after-school time. Earth Day is April 22nd, and Arbor Day will be in the mix, creating an educational framework for studying plants, trees, and planting butterfly or pollinator gardens.

Toss in a spring scavenger hunt to look for specific blooming flowers or the first amphibians of the season. Just be sure to bring your raincoats, umbrellas, and boots in case a downpour strikes.

May – Waterways & Mother’s Day

Water is the theme for May. New life is springing up everywhere, so head over on your toddler girl tricycle to a local pond, stream, or wetland to check out the various frogs, insects, turtles, fish, and aquatic plants. If you’re lucky enough to be near the coast, look for riparian zones bursting with new life.

Take out the canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards (don’t forget the life jackets) and go for a ride. Bring along a picnic on your journey designed just for Mom so you can celebrate Mother’s Day in nature together. This is a great time to take new family photos.

June – Summer & Boundless Days

School is coming to an end, but that shouldn’t limit your adventures. Go hiking and birding in cooler temperatures in the morning, while finding a swimming hole for the heat of the afternoon. This month is an excellent time for beach days and collecting seashells.

Bring along a Frisbee, sandcastle tools, or pickleball set. Your goal is to get each other laughing for a while. As you ride bikes in the park or climb a trail to a mountainside river, don’t forget to bring fresh seasonal fruit. Explaining how agriculture shifts from season to season is reinforced with a sweet slice of watermelon or a bunch of grapes.

July – Celebration & Exploration

The long days of summer are finally here with 4th of July fireworks and summer festivals in full bloom. Mornings are best for family bike rides or dog walking, so you avoid the heat of the day.

Stick more to evening events like block parties or cooking s’mores over the fire while using homemade star charts to track the movement of constellations. Go on a night walk with a nature flashlight and teach your kids about eyeshine from nocturnal creatures.

August – Late Summer Relaxation

You’ve only got a little bit of summer left, so make the most out of it by hosting special guided walks or visiting seasonal food events. Get out on the water as much as possible. Your goal is to hear the symphony of crickets and frogs while enjoying a late-night meal and swapping stories of your adventures together.

Fruit picking, outdoor concerts, and farmers’ markets are all your friends. Plan a backyard overnight camping trip. Air out the tent and teach your kids how to properly maintain a campsite while telling scary stories about school starting up soon.

September – A Taste of Harvest Change

The cool air of September signals the shift into harvest season. School will be back in session, and community gardens should be full of vibrant veggies and fruits. Take the kids apple picking. You can pull the Besrey toddler girl tricycle behind, fixed with a basket to the seat, so the kids can bring home more delicious red and Granny Smith apples.

Talk about Fungi! Labor Day weekend means some time off from work to discuss the power of mushrooms. Pick a rainier day to get into the woods and find a few species living in action. This month is the last chance for a fall garden, so get to planting!

October – Spooky Color Creativity

Halloween makes October stand out. Everyone is anticipating trick-or-treating, so why fight it? Use the holiday to discuss why leaf peepers drive north or walk around under seasonal skies while picking pumpkins for your porch display.

Bring out the sweaters and flannel for a late-night movie in nature or take a hayride together while you imagine what “spooky” silhouettes are hiding in the tree line. It’s fun to cook and bake with nature’s ingredients harvested in October, as you can teach kids how the bounty of Mother Nature is both delicious and nutritious.

November – The Gratitude of Outdoors

It’s the last chance to get in hikes, camping, and walks before winter hits. Teach your kids about gratitude for the world as you turn your attention to Thanksgiving. Track wildlife as they prepare for colder months, especially after a light rain or snow, when prints are easier to spot.

Get out those backyard feeders and position them by the windows you’ll use the most in the winter. You want to be ready when the various colors of birds return.

December – Closing Out the Year in Nature

You’ve done it! A whole year of family nature activities, from watching your little ones pedal their 3 in 1 toddler tricycles for 1-4 years from Besrey to enjoying the night sky during a late-night kayaking excursion. Embrace the season and go for evening “sparkling lights” walks in the community or at a curated local garden.

Have fun caroling with neighbors and sharing hot chocolate after an extended snowball fight. Watch how the animals and bugs “turn in” for the season as you wind down the year with gifts of memories and new ideas for the upcoming year to unwrap under the Christmas Tree. Why not include a new “adventure jar” next to the carefully wrapped toddler girl tricycle in the corner?

Bringing it All Together

With a family nature plan in place, you’ll bridge the world outside with the energy of youthful exploration. Stay flexible with your events, as the weather will change and kids can get tired. Mix in familiar traditions with new ideas and seasonal hooks.

Have fun with your adventures and document them with photos and videos. A great way to close out the year is a family slideshow playing on the smart TV as you unwrap presents and fill up on holiday meals.

Remember that a year of outdoor adventures doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Adjust your plans to match your local climate, family schedule, and children’s ages. Turn these experiences into habits. You never know when you’ll be enjoying them with the next generation years down the road.
